Lake Cumberland Speedway along with McGowan Excavating team-up for facelift
(The speedway will open for its 30th Season and have noticeable changes)
By Chris Tilley
BURNSIDE, KY (March 9, 2010)—Before opening its gates for the 30th season of Dirt Track Racing Entertainment in early March, the Lake Cumberland Speedway in Burnside, KY is currently receiving a major facelift.
McGowan Excavating, Inc. of Faubush, KY is completing renovations of the facility’s racing surface for the upcoming season. The family owned and operated company has been providing quality excavating services to the citizens of Pulaski County for over two decades. The fully insured company offers site prep, dozer and backhoe work as well as other various excavating needs.
McGowan Excavating recently teamed up with the Lake Cumberland Speedway, and for 2010, will have a brand new racing surface for the drivers. ‘We hope the new dirt will bring some life back into the track, not only for the drivers but the fans seeing a great show as well,’ stated McGowan Excavating President Royce McGowan.
Not only will drivers have a new racing surface, but will have additional outside pit parking on the hill behind the track office, as officials recently moved the fencing area and leveled the ground to accommodate more race trailers. After the new dirt was placed on the track, the inside concrete wall, which started in turn one and went all the way around to turn four, has been removed by McGowan and his staff. No large race trailers will be permitted in the infield pit area, this will now be used for staging of the race-cars. A few smaller open race trailers will be permitted on the front row of the pit area.
‘We hope to make several more changes including renovations to the bathrooms, concessions and grandstand seating to benefit our race fans as well as our drivers and make Lake Cumberland Speedway a fun and enjoyable place to bring the family to see some great racing’ stated Track Promoter Brandon Hardgrove. ‘I really want to thank Royce (McGowan) and his crew for doing a great job in preparing an incredible racing surface for Lake Cumberland (Speedway), they really do some professional work,’ said Hardgrove.
McGowan, who is a driver in the Speedway’s premier division, the Late Model class, is looking forward to the changes from a driver’s stand point as well. ‘The new surface will help make racing on this 3/8th’s mile track better from top to bottom’ stated McGowan again. McGowan Excavating also completed the re-surfacing project at the Ponderosa Speedway in Junction City, KY prior to the start of the 2007 racing season.
The Speedway, purchased by Harold Hardgrove in November 1997, will continue the family name, even after the sudden passing of Hardgrove in August 2009. Hardgrove’s son Brandon and daughter Casey will guide the motorsports facility into the upcoming racing season.
The Speedway offers dirt track racing entertainment on Saturday Nights April-October with five divisions offered, including: Late Models, Open Wheel Modifieds, Super Dirt Stocks, Chevettes and Front Wheel Drives.
Some of the exciting events on the 2010 schedule at Lake Cumberland Speedway include three stops by C.J. Rayburn’s National All-Star Racing Association on May 15th, and September 17-18th and a lone appearance by the newly formed Volunteer Racing Series from Tennessee. The Super Late Model division will headline the schedule starting on April 3rd. The Speedway has their first race scheduled for March 20th for all divisions except Late Models.
